Cast Iron Dutch Oven: Safety Stuffs in Camping

Perhaps, every camper is familiar with cast iron Dutch oven. This is a very convenient camping tool which definitely makes cooking a lot easier and the food outstanding. Plus, you don’t have to bring a stand because this Dutch oven can be bought in the three-legged type. However, like any other cooking equipment, it would be the best idea to take some safety measures like bringing items that are essential for a safe cooking. Safety stuffs such as gloves, lid lifter, lid stand, long-handled tongs, plastic utensils, and whisk broom are necessary to prevent unwanted accidents due to careless actions.

Primarily, who would have ever held on a heavy iron casted pot over an open fire and coal without any hand cover? This is such a foolish act to do and even dull-minded people wouldn’t think of it. I can’t even imagine how painful dealing with hot stuffs could be. Hence, the use of thick leather gloves is basic. It is also another advantage when you use gloves that are not too tight so you can easily put them in and out your hands. Don’t under estimate what a hot and bubbling simmer can do to your skin once you accidentally loosen your hand in the pot holder.

A lid lifter is another essential cooking tool needed especially in opening or rotating the pot’s cover. It simply allows you to lift the lid even when you are quite a distance away from the pot. Usually, it is an iron rod with hook at the end so you can easily turn or lift the lid whenever needed.

Another important tool in assuring safety when using a Dutch oven is a lid stand. This is of much importance once you’ve started cooking and you want to put your pot’s hot lid in a safe place where it won’t slide off. However, the need for using this lid stand is not obligatory but for sure it would be a big help.

Long handled tongs most especially the Teflon-coated or rigid plastic tongs are important when you want to put in ingredients in your hot pot. In order not to have close contact with the simmer and the open fire, you will need the use of long handled tongs. In this manner, you are also assured of keeping the seasoned pot away from scratches caused by metal utensils as alternatives to tongs. Though, if you can’t really get away the tempting utensils then make sure to choose those Teflon-coated ones.

And finally, once you’re done cooking patiently remove ashes off the lid and from the pot using a broom-straw bristle otherwise you add them up to your recipe. You wouldn’t want a cuisine that taste like ashes, would you?

These are the important safety stuffs you will need when you go camping with your cast iron Dutch oven. Check them out before you leave so you’ll be sure to have safe cooking.
